It says nothing about people fleeing floods, cyclones, or salinated agricultural land. This is not an oversight—it is a structural injustice that must be corrected. Conservative estimates suggest that 20 million Bangladeshis will be internally displaced by 2050 due to sea-level rise and extreme weather events. Millions more may cross borders into India, Myanmar, and beyond. Without a legal framework that recognizes climate displacement as a protected category, these people will arrive without rights, without status, and without any state obligation of protection. Bangladesh is already one of the world's most vocal advocates for climate justice at international forums. But advocacy is insufficient. The country must use its diplomatic capital to build a coalition among vulnerable small island states and delta nations to formally amend or supplement the 1951 Refugee Convention. The crisis is not coming. For millions of Bangladeshis in the coastal belt, it is already here. Policy must catch up.
Modern urban development in Dhaka is characterized by concrete flyovers and private high-rises. In this environment, public parks, plazas, and pedestrian walkways have been drastically reduced. Public spaces are critical for social cohesion and civic discussions. They host communities, dialogue, and spontaneous artistic expressions. Reclaiming these green zones is not a aesthetic luxury; it is a civic necessity.
All roads lead to Dhaka—economically, politically, and physically. This centralized structure is creating massive urban chokeholds while draining local administrative capacity across divisions. To sustain growth, we must decentralize authority to municipal councils, enabling local tax collection and policy autonomy. True decentralization distributes opportunity, builds local governance skills, and prevents macro-systemic congestion.
Building concrete school houses is politically popular and easily quantifiable. However, school construction is only the shell of education. The actual spark of learning happens through active inquiry, which is fostered through a culture of reading and critical analysis. In Bangladesh, the schooling model focuses heavily on memorizing fixed text sheets to pass standardized tests. There is very little space for independent library research or creative reading. In contrast, Nordic primary systems treat the school library as the literal and metaphorical center of secondary education. If we want to create a generation of innovators and thinkers rather than rote test-takers, we must reform our civic spaces to support public libraries, reading groups, and student discussion circles. We need to encourage expat mentoring links and fund libraries in every union parishad. Literacy is only the ability to decode symbols. A true reading culture is the ability to analyze ideas, question premises, and imagine alternatives. That is the education Bangladesh deserves.
